2012 Special Awards Winners

American Meterological Society

AMS is the professional society for the study of weather. Two senior division students winners will be awarded for the most creative project in atmospheric science and will each receive a Certificate of Outstanding Achievement.

American Psychological Association

The APA Education Directorate and Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools recognizes outstanding research in psychology. Senior division student winners are awarded with a Certificate of Award.

Broadcom Masters

The Broadcom MASTERS is the national STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) competition for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders nominated to compete by their local SSP-affiliated science and engineering fair. Sponsored by Broadcom Foundation, a private non-profit public benefit organization funded by Broadcom Corporation, the Broadcom MASTERS encourages middle schoolers to continue their studies in STEM courses throughout high school by igniting a personal passion for science, engineering and innovation through a competition that exposes them to independent research, scientific inquiry, hands-on learning and teamwork.The Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology, and Engineering for Rising Stars) semifinalists come from 251 middle schools across the United States with concentrations in California, Florida, Texas, Ohio and Oregon. Each 1st & 2nd Place junior division winners from each science fair category is given a  nomination packet to register to participate.

Council of Texas Statisticians

The Council of Texas Statisticians (COTS) sponsores an award at the ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair (EMTSEF). An award is given for “The Best Use of Statistics in a Science Project”. A team of judges from the San Antonio Chapter of the American Statistical Association select three senior division projects that show excellence in the use and knowledge of statistical methods.

Intel Excellence in Computer Science

Intel hopes to increase the interest in computer science, one of today's fastest growing fields and an important source of innovation for the 21st century. The student with the project demonstrating the best use of computer science will receive an Intel Certificate of Excellence in Computer Science Award and $200.

Mu Alpha Theta

The National High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Club will award a Certificate of Award to the student whose project demonstrates the most challenging, thorough, and creative investigation of a problem involving modern mathematics. A certificate is awarded to the student winner.

National Oceanographic Atmospheric Association

NOAA awards a certificate to two students (middle or high school) whose research emphasizes NOAA's mission to understand and predict changes in the Earth's environment and conserve and manage coastal and marine resources to meet our nation's economic, social, and environmental needs.

National Space Society & San Antonio Space Society

A chapter of the National Space Society is a relatively informal group of space enthusiasts who join together for comradeship and education. A certificate is awarded to the student winner.

Office of Naval Research-US Navy & Marine Corps

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) encourages the young scientists and engineers of our country. ONR awards 2 to 10 certificates signed by the Chief of Naval Research. A certificate is awarded to all student winners. Top winner is awarded a certificate & $75 Gift Certificate. Judged and presented by a NAVY representative.

Society for In Vitro Biology

The Society for In Vitro Biology (SIVB) was founded in 1946 as the Tissue Culture Association to foster exchange of knowledge of in vitro biology of cells, tissues and organs from both plant and animals (including humans). The focus is on biological research, development, and applications of significance to science and society. One student winner will be awarded a certificate of Excellence from the SIVB.
 

Society of American Military Engineers

The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) San Antonio Post awards are based on: Integrity of the student presenting/accomplishing the project; Applicability of the project further technology and quality of life of mankind; Technical Merit of the project; Explanation of project by student; Enthusiasm for the project by the student; Interest of the student in future science and engineering; and Environmental merits/impact of the project. Student winners are awarded an award certificate, a SAME San Antonio Post coin and a check ranging from $100-$200 depending on the number of winners.

South Texas Chapter-Health Physics Society

The South Texas Chapter of the Health Physics Society is a professional society that was organized and chartered in 1964 with the following objectives: Developing scientific knowledge in the study of radiation, Devising practical means to protect people and their environment from harmful effects of radiation, Providing and supporting meetings to discuss scientific endeavors, Encouraging scientific research and education dedicated to the science of radiation protection, Aiding in research/education opportunities in health physics and radiation protection for college and university students. One winner is chosen and awarded a Certificate of Excellence.

Texas Academy of Audiology

The American Academy of Audiology Foundation is pleased to partner with the American Academy of Audiology to foster the audiologists of tomorrow with its science fair recruitment initiative. The AAAF will provide funding to state academies to award to students who present outstanding secondary school science fair projects in hearing, balance, and sound.

Texas Tech University

Department of Natural Resource Management NATURAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT is the application of ecological knowledge to natural resources in a manner that strikes a balance between sustaining those resources and the needs of people. The department of NRM awards 4 students winners a Certificates of Excellence.

College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources have planted the seeds of excellence in teaching, research and public service. Today, they continue that mission of award-winning innovation, both academically and technologically. Three students will be awarded Certificates of Excellence.

Texas Tech University

Plant and Soil Science Department awards 2 scholarships to senior division students with projects in the Plant and Soil Science category. Two students will be awarded a $1,000 and a $500 scholarship. This will be contingent upon them attending Texas Tech and majoring in one of the Plant and Soil Science degrees.
